H. Richard Yoon, M.D., and Steven Hopkins, M.D., who have served the region with distinction as vascular surgeons, have joined the
Wellmont CVA Heart Institute.
Dr. Yoon and Dr. Hopkins will see patients at the heart institute’s Johnson City office, 2428 Knob Creek Road. The two physicians had operated as an independent practice in Johnson City before concluding they would serve their patients best as part of the heart institute.
“We have observed the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute for years and noticed the quality of care provided by the physicians and other providers is extraordinary,” Dr. Hopkins said. “Their skills and commitment to superior care have helped ensure the Wellmont hospitals they serve are consistently ranked among the elite in the nation. Sharing best practices with colleagues who advance a culture of excellence will give our patients seamless access to additional resources that will benefit their health considerably.”
Dr. Yoon agreed.
“As a fellow cardiovascular physician, I quickly became aware of the breadth and depth of services delivered at the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute,” he said. “With such diverse offerings in the clinic and at the hospitals, patients can receive comprehensive, world-class care close to home. It is exciting for me to work with fellow physicians who have been recognized as leaders and pioneers in their fields and to collaborate with them to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
The two physicians perform all forms of general vascular surgery to correct a variety of conditions, including:
- Cerebral vascular disease, using traditional surgery methods or carotid artery stenting
- Peripheral vascular disease, using bypasses and minimally invasive stenting
- Aneurysmal disease, using traditional surgery methods and endovascular techniques
In addition, Dr. Hopkins and Dr. Yoon perform the necessary work to clear the pathway to the spine so neurosurgeons can perform operations on that part of the body. Dr. Yoon also conducts minimally invasive vein procedures, such as all treatments for varicose veins.
Dr. Hopkins graduated from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown in 1993. He completed his general surgery residency at Akron General Medical Center and earned a master’s degree in biology at the University of Akron in Ohio in 1999. He ended his training with a vascular surgery fellowship at Wayne State University in Detroit in 2001.
Dr. Yoon graduated from the Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock in 2006. He finished his general surgery residency at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in South Carolina in 2011 and his vascular surgery fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, in 2013.
The two physicians are certified in surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
“With the additions of Dr. Hopkins and Dr. Yoon, our practice is gaining two outstanding vascular surgeons who will enhance our expertise in this subspecialty,” said Jerry Blackwell, M.D., the heart institute’s president. “We have been impressed with the skill set they have demonstrated daily and are thrilled to have the opportunity to incorporate them into our team. They will be a perfect fit for the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute and enable us to further strengthen our cardiovascular program in Johnson City.”
